TNAI Community Health Nursing Manual
PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION
TNAI Community Health Nursing Manual. This edition builds on the existing knowledge provided in previous editions by illustrious academicians, experts and medical professionals. There have been several changes that have occurred among nursing practices, health care infrastructure and administration, government health care delivery systems and national & international health goals. To equip nursing students and professionals with relevant information on current practices and policies, the Trained Nurses’ Association of India (TNAI) has entrusted this important task to me. With the support of a group of nursing experts, we have completed the fourth edition in the TNAI Community Health Nursing Manual series.
Despite emphasis being laid on ‘Health for all’, many of the sustainable development goals are yet to materialize in various parts of the world. Furthermore, the challenges of income inequality, poverty, natural disasters and pandemics have created a requirement for novel approaches and practices in community health.
Based on the inputs provided by experts, the various chapters have been rewritten by incorporating relevant information in line with existing national policies and the global framework. Emphasis had been provided on national health programmes as it is a key determinant of community health within India. The revised edition of chapters has been undertaken under the guidance of TNAI executive committee members.
The foundation chapters that have undergone extensive revision include Community Health in India, Plan of Work, Principles of Work and Professional Ethics for Nurses. Certain chapters which have been rewritten to incorporate developments or changes in national health policy (targets & initiatives) are Family Welfare Services, Community Health Nursing in Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
The new chapters included in the 4th edition are Communicable Diseases, Non-Communicable Diseases, Nutrition and Indian Systems of Medicine. The chapters on Communicable Diseases and Non-Communicable Diseases are framed based on WHO’s framework and existing national health policies. The chapter on Communicable Diseases includes all recent diseases caused by novel pathogens such as SARS, Swine flu, Ebola, Nipah, Zika and COVID-19. The inclusion of Indian Systems of Medicine is to highlight the changes in national health policy towards integration of AYUSH into existing health infrastructure.
The chapter on public health administration has been rewritten to reflect the changes in the organization of health care services, delivery and also provides a comprehensive understanding of the various categories of health personnel and their responsibilities.
The highlight of this manual is its focus on the role of community health nurses in all spheres of health management including delivery of health services, health education, community program planning and administration. It is hoped that this edition will motivate nurses to pursue research and adopt innovative practices in their day-to-day activities.
The Trained Nurses Association of India acknowledges gratefully the written contributions of the following members for helping with the revision of this edition.
