The Concept of NJI
(by M. E. Butcher. from NJI, February 1912)
Does anybody want a journal? i can only answer for about six individual, who by their practice show that they do. they do their utmost to fill its pages. As for the rest, well-what is it to be? of those six, two or three try to get original articles., three send reports, or an original letter. Now, to my mind, this can hardly be said to be a justification for a Nurses’ Journal. You may know, I personally was not in favour of, at any rate, a monthly one. I did not think we could get matter good enough in sufficient quantity to keep it going, and I should have been only too glad to confess myself proved in the wrong, were it possible. Certainly, I concede this much: the year’s work has shown it is not so impossible as it at first looked to me, nevertheless, I have been within two or three days of a BLANK JOURNAL, had in hand only one short ” FOLKLORE” wrote frantic letters to my doctor-friends which produced, I think, two articles in one day: one I saved for future contingency and filled up the rest with cuttings and stuff of my own ! But this to me seems far from ideal. It is useless to say what we have not got and the difficulty of getting what we do get, and there leave it so I should like to make the following suggestions, as, now that our Official Organ is well on its feet, it would perhaps be a pity to lay it.
AS TO Matter, we need at least one origional Medical or Surgical or similar article every month (to get this is no easy matter). we should have one for young nurses, probationers (who writes this?). One for mothers. Giving one page to poetry, one to notes and news, and one to things to make a note of, we have several pages left, what are these to be filled with? and who is to fill them? Presuming the Associations intend the Journal to continue, it should be a matter of serious consideration by them as publishers, and not a matter to be calmly shelved on to the Editor and Manager, and thought no more about it, except to see it when it comes in, except to see it when it comes in, perhaps not even to read it. In resining my post, I should like to see it made easier for my successor, and one lesson the year has taught me, and for which I do not regret it, is the support the Editor standards in need of, and in the future one hopes to give to another. I feel sure it is only want of realisation of what is needed and what one can do when one tries that keeps helpful people back. When each one makes up her mind that she has something to write about, and no nurse of ex-perience has none, a little trying will bring it out, may be a by-gone lesson, useful experience or amusing one, some present-day news of hospital or case of interest, of holidays and how and where to spend them, and that it is her duty to tell others, an opportunity will be found….
